Long time no post.
At least 90-95% of my friend's list will likely burst into hysterical laughter in the next 10 seconds or so. But I don't care. I've always said I'm an unabashed fan, and that's not changin' today!
The New Kids on the Block are back and I'm going to see 'em! I didn't get to their first time around and this time I'm making up for it! I got VIP passes and I'm meeting them before the show and we have seats in the first 10 rows (exact seats are assigned after the orders are processed or whatever). I just spent the last 15-20 minutes refreshing the buy page frantically, willing it to let me get through, shaking like a leaf!
Now, of course, I'm in a panic that I typed the credit card info wrong, or somehow messed something else up. But I've been soooo positive that I was GOING to this show damnit all week and I'm trying to hang onto that positivity, 'cause it served me well by letting me get through.
I really do feel faint. I'm going to listen to Summertime again now.

Please pray for, think of, send good vibes to Kenya. Or whatever else is you that you do for those in need.
With the craziness of the holidays and the after-exhaustion I've been experiencing, I hadn't been caught up on any sort of "real" world news until I received an email from the organization through which I sponsor Victor, a 4 year old boy in Nairobi. This email brought to my attention the fact that, now, over 300 people have died in Kenya in the last few days because of tribal tensions after a shady presidential election result. Both primary candidates are blaming the other for the turmoil and while they continue to point fingers and place blame elsewhere, the residents of Kenya that represent the two candidates' tribes (Kikuyu and Luo) are killing each other, dying while holed up in churches, running out of food...
The school is currently shut down and the director has told everyone to stay in their homes, or wherever they are, and we're all hoping for the best. Meanwhile, local stores have shut down, prices have sky-rocketed and there's no telling how long this will go on and how long the food will last. Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes, several hundred have fled to Uganda and Tanzania... the director of the school, Beatrice, is emailing the sponsorship organization volunteers as often as she can to update us on the situation and.. with every email, it's sounding more scary and just... bad.
And there's nothing I can do about it. I can't afford a plane ticket to Nairobi and if I could, it would be far too dangerous to go. Mailing items can take weeks or months when things are running normally, and it's quite likely anything sent would be stolen now anyway (it's frankly always a possibility). All I can do is wait and hope like crazy that it ends before too many more people are beaten or killed.
I've not been having a good day. I don't know if I'm becoming ill, or I'm just over-tired from too many weeks of very very bad sleep habits, but I've been increasingly weak and exhausted and just... not well all day. It's almost 2 and I need to be trying to sleep. But I haven't updated in a while and while I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year, my mind is in Kenya and... it's just an odd feeling to be sitting in my comfy home with my new DvDs playing, typing away on my laptop computer about beginning a brand new wonderful year when I know that innocent people are dying because of stupid things like politics and inequality between tribes and races and 'classes' of people.
I don't want to be a downer, and I truly do hope that you are all having a wonderful start to 2008. But if you have a moment to spare good thoughts for the people in Kenya... or really just anywhere where there's such turmoil and suffering, even if it's up the road... it can never hurt, right? :)
Happy 2008. Here's to ... peace and equality and kindness winning out over selfishness and unfounded hatreds. In Kenya and everywhere else.

...when we all start thinking about what to buy for our friends and family for the holidays. New outfits for events. Tons of food for family gatherings. New toys, new games, etc.
Every year Marty donates to two very special causes, Child's Play and Doctor's Without Borders. The first raises money to give sick children in various hospitals games and toys to keep them entertained and having fun while they are recovering from serious illnesses, and possibly alone during the holidays (he donates to the Sick's Kids Hospital in Toronto - a place where I spent some time myself as a child). The second, as most know, sends medical care into scary places around the world where people can't afford medical attention or simply don't have access to it (they are currently raising money to aid with an Ebola outbreak in the Republic of Congo!). Both are very close to our hearts.
He has begun issuing 'challenges' to everyone who reads his blog, to help him raise more money for these causes. This year, for every $1 someone donates, he will send $2 to Child's Play AND $1 to Doctors Without Borders. So every $1 is turning into $4, sorta.
A couple of our mutual friends have already donated, but I know I have at least a small handful of folks on my list that aren't on his. So...

The charity organization that I sponsor a Kenyan child through holds an annual eBay auction of items from around the world. Everything from wall hangings, to jewelry, to baby clothes, to purses, to games, to an African Safari for 2!!
All proceeds go to education programs in China and Kenya, which they are working tirelessly on all the time. The child I sponsor is actually a student in Nairobi at this wonderful school.. I could go, but I ramble enough as it is.. lol
Anyway, as far as I know, this auction is available to any and all.

To see multiple posts about the same terrifying and horribly sad incident on my friend's page. Only because those posts confirm that my Salt Lake City friends are alive and well! At least, for the most part.. upset, understandably, but alive. I hope that every last one of you posts something within the day so that I can know you're *all* still out there!
Syn.. I really hope your friend is okay! Donna, I hope none of your family decided to go shopping yesterday! Alanja, hug Jimmy and then slap him for caring too much about Heroes! ;)

(For those who don't know, there was a shooting in a fairly popular mall in SLC last night and a few people were killed or put in critical condition. Probably half of my friend's list - if not more - are SLC'ers and some had friends and family who worked there or were heading there or something.. too many close calls anyway... There are many articles on SLC newspaper sites about it if you wanna know more. Shouldn't be a difficult Google.)

We're home. It wasn't particularly easy (or cheap!), but we're home.
No news on my missing items, however. I've yet to speak personally with some of the bridesmaids, and I'm thinking about checking again with some of the family members, just in case something has turned up since Saturday night.
Just wanted to let everyone who was concerned know that we did manage to get home anyway... and remind everyone to keep an eye out for that bag and coat! :) And scarf! It's cold outside.
I also wanted to say thank you to everyone who was just wonderful to us (as always!) on our trip and made it such a pleasant experience. Sharyl for playing tour guide, Madelyn for putting us up for so long, just everyone... the wedding was beautiful and I am so honored to have been a part of it. Donna's been 'my girl' for a long time and I'm so happy she's happy. She looked to be floating on air. And getting to hang out with all the girls beforehand rocked. :) You guys are all amazing.
I miss you all already, and I can't wait till I see y'all again!
...just remind me to never sit anything down anywhere ever again... *sigh*
If anyone has any suggestions for who to talk to about the missing bits, please tell me! I'm collecting all the info and contact info I can right now...
