I've been looking for a recipe for soy or tamari sauce, only low salt and veg. Every recipe I find calls for Beef Bouillon :(
I guess I could substitute veg bouillion, but figured I'd ask here.

This is kind of interesting. It would be cooler if Lucas and Guy showed up. Or just Lucas in general. And Bobbie. OK, I'll step off the soapbox now.

http://www.drrobinscorpio.com/2008/08/celebration-of.html When I heard Nadine reveal that Nikolas kissed her, I smiled at the excitement in her voice. I felt the exact same way the first time Stone kissed me. I remember everything about that day – the way he looked...

| foods for a care package |
[20 Aug 2008|06:42pm] |
My parents are in the middle of moving and renovating their new house, and I know they have no time for cooking - they've been living off fake meats and easy meals for a while now. I want to send them a care package of some easy meals that they can cook quickly, so I'm looking for ideas!
I know I'm going to make falafels (uncooked and frozen into patties) so they can just quickly fry them up for a meal, as well as some uncooked and frozen cookie dough (also in balls for easy baking). What are some of your favourite foods that I could add? My mom's a vegetarian, but I'm vegan, so I'll be sending vegan only, though I'm pretty good at modifying anything. I'm looking for stuff that can be frozen and mailed easily. I can either send food that is totally prepared or stuff that needs to be baked/fried/etc at a later date.
Thanks for any ideas!!
Grace

A little late in the day. but AGC #366 is up. Enjoy.
CNN's making a big deal of New York mayor Bloomberg's proposal to put up big wind farms in the outlying parts of the city. I think it's a good idea, I think that most people who oppose wind power are way out of line... but they usually win out in the US, so I don't expect this proposal to go anywhere.
Wind power produces electricity without expending any fuel, makes manufacturing jobs (probably local ones, considering the large size of some components and the increasing expense of shipping), as well as maintenance jobs... it's distributed, making it less vulnerable to attack than old style large power plants. It's just all-around superior. Some people think it's ugly... OOOOOOH, freaking UGLY. Get a grip. As for killing birds, there's no way it kills as much wildlife as fossil fuels do.

i am so thankful for my "dmb family" today. Leroi has left us, and we are all in so much pain. i feel like no one truly understands - but my friends continue to reach out from across the country, from ANOTHER country and i know we are all hurting today, so very badly. i'm never alone.
i am so thankful to have my ants in my life.
"here we are all us stand around, we're leaning heavy on each other"
"whatever tears at her, whatever holds her down, and if nothing can be done, she'll make the best of what's around"
this thread always makes me smile, and i need more smiles today :)

What is a Canadian?
In general, anyone born in Canada acquired Canadian citizenship at birth. The only exceptions concern children born to diplomats, where additional requirements apply.
Okay, that's pretty straightforward.
What if you were born outside of Canada?
Any person born outside Canada after 15 February 1977, who has a Canadian parent at the time of birth, is automatically a Canadian citizen by descent.
Great. Perfect. Surely there are no "gotchas" here, right?
Well...
Okay, see if you can follow this:
Meg's grandmother is Canadian, born and raised, and lived here most of her life.
Meg's mother was born in the USA, but she's lived in Canada most of her life. Since her parent was a Canadian, Meg's mother is also a Canadian.
Meg was born in the USA, but she's lived in Canada most of her life (since she was a year old). Since her parent was a Canadian, Meg is also a Canadian.
For now.
For now?
Under the current law, Meg will literally cease to be a Canadian when she turns 28 in March.
Let that sink in for a moment.
If you want something else to consider: Think about how well you understand your own country's citizenship laws. Virtually every law is a complicated mess of bureaucracy, built upon layers and layers of amendments to older laws. And each piece of legislation seems to hold scores of obscure exceptions that seemingly contradict the expected rules...and common sense. This is not unique to citizenship -- it's virtually impossible for you to avoid breaking laws (almost every day) simply because of how overbearing and convoluted your country's legal system. And that's why you need to be very polite to cops........but never tell them anything.
But let's get back on track here.
In theory, all Meg has to do is apply to renew her citizenship and *presto*, she'll be a Canadian for life.
Well, that's all fine and dandy....if anyone had bothered to fucking tell her.
The ONLY reason we found out about this now is because Meg is in the process of applying for a passport so that we can go to the USA next year.
Oh -- and don't read something in the last line that isn't there. There is nothing stopping Meg from getting a valid, legal, Canadian passport. It's just that something during the application process sent up a flag in Meg's mind and *she* took the initiative to research her situation.
If the USA hadn't implemented draconian border policies post 9/11... If we hadn't planned a trip there... If Meg hadn't been applying for a passport... If that hadn't lead her to investigate something she noticed...
Come March, she'd no longer be a Canadian. And she would have no idea. We'd only find out at some future time when she tried to apply for something like a passport, or tried to get a job in certain fields.
For Meg, this idea was particularly unsettling because she feels that she has few things that she can identify with. She has, effectively, no family except for her mother. They moved around a lot when she was young, and doesn't strongly identify a "home town". She was home schooled and so lacks a link to a high school and such. She left a pretty restrictive religion in her teens and not only lost any kind of connection to a church, but has also been forced to sever her ties to the "friends" she had there too.
She said last night that one of the only things she's always felt sure about is the fact that she was a dual-citizen of the USA and Canada, and that was something special that she could hold on to. And now, that's being threatened too. (She is still a citizen of the USA by virtue of having been born there, though she does lack any of the conventional identification normally associated with that, so there would still be a LOT of paperwork involved in moving the the states.)
I have full faith that this situation will be resolved soon, but it's quite unsettling to know that - in just a few months - we'd be in a place where a simple and easy solution would be impossible.

http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2008/08/begun-the-nuff.html And now for something completely different: A cat with four ears. Meet "Yoda," the first kitty equipped for quadraphonic sound. Adopted by a nice couple in Chicago, Yoda hears well and is otherwise normal, apart from a tendency to emit feedback when held too close to speakers. More pix and article at the Daily Mail.
Ears to you, Mary O.
